Alec Baldwin Mocks American Airline carriers Debate on 'Saturday Evening Live' (Video)
It's something you'd think only the crassest of Hollywood producers would develop - placing attractiveness right into a celebration as ghastly within the Nanjing massacre - nevertheless it's an element central for the Flowers of War, a contrived and unpersuasive have a look in an oft-dramatized historic moment. One of the primary Chinese-funded features to topline a substantial American star (Inseperable, with Kevin Spacey, first demonstrated at Pusan in October), Zhang Yimou's ornately produced drama will instantly draw attention due to the presence of Christian Bale atop the cast but gets the misfortune of coming so close round the heels from the truly outstanding film concentrating on the same setting, Lu Chuan's Capital of scotland - Existence and Dying. Carrying out a 12 ,. 16 commercial launch on home turf, Wrekin Hill has set one-week runs beginning 12 ,. 23 in NY, La and San Francisco Bay Area, with wider release to follow along with together with next season. But commercial prospects, no less than within the U . s . States, look limited.our editor recommendsChristian Bale Chinese Epic 'Flowers of War' Will get near U.S. Distribution Deal (Exclusive)'Flowers of War' Trailer: Christian Bale Safeguards Women From Entering Japanese in 1937 China (Video)China to Submit 'The Flowers of War' in Foreign-Language Oscar RaceToronto 2011: Top U.S. Customers Get First Look at Christian Bale's 'The Flowers of War' PHOTOS: 6 Auteurs Won Over By Christian Bale With various historic novel by high-profile Chinese author Yan Gelingthat will probably be launched inside the U.S. next season and scripted by Liu Heng, whose collaboration while using director stretches to Ju Dou, Flowers comprises a conscious bid to produce the problems in the Nanjing story considerably open to a wider audience by placing a politically unaligned American in the heart of a desperate quantity of local regular people made up of convent schoolgirls and exotic courtesans. Offering little historic background, aside from to condition that 200,000 everybody was slaughtered throughout and following a Japanese invasion of China's then-capital (City put the figure more than 300,000, reflecting ongoing debate inside the extent in the casualties), the knowledge begins inside the city's big chunks of rock after its fall on 12 ,. 13, 1937. Ready of tenuous safety will be the female students at Winchester Cathedral, which sits behind walls and will be offering places to pay for within the victorious Japanese soldiers that are broadly rampaging without restraint. COVER STORY: An Oscar Champion Turns East Taking refuge there too is lone wolf American John Burns (Bale) who, along with his hairy beard resembles a ླྀs hippie too as with his kinds of speaking sounds both silly and anachronistic (he makes repeated usage of "whatever"). His description by one of the Chinese just like a "jerk" could not be apt, as Burns starts raiding the sanctuary's wine stash, demands nonexistent money and responds selfishly in every single instance. There can be various motives behind representing the white-colored guy inside the story just like a money-grubbing, unintelligent and uncouth mercenary but, clearly, the ideologically uncommitted Yank in foreign places can be a standard movie character, with Bogart's Ron in Casablanca because the wedding standard-bearer. Let's just say Bale's Burns doesn't quite measure compared to that standard. It's apparent within the start that Burns has to start at this kind of low point to make sure that he'll include a remarkable dramatic arc to forge, from self-centered sot to noble dark evening. Sadly, neither the script nor the actor give you the character with any backstory, real or invented he expresses shock within the suffering he witnesses, but where has he been in the last day or two? The level of smoothness brings no perspective or energy of observation to anything which is morally only a obvious vessel, waiting being filled. PHOTOS: 'The Dark Dark evening Increases' Start Searching Scaling the walls to discover some protection that goes for them are 13 fancy ladies in the local brothel. Decked as if prepared to carry out a chorus number from Flower Drum Song, the noisy, boistrous gals push the cowed teenage students aside making themselves right in your house. For his part, Burns can't believe his fortune and takes an immediate special fascination with the haughtiest famous them, the attractive Yu Mo (significant newcomer Ni Ni), who also provides unquestionably the most effective British. Reassuring Burns japan "won't touch Westerners," Mo withholds any favors for the time being, promising the eager fellow, "In the event you let us, I will help you in manners you could't imagine. A lot of us will." Burns's accidental transformation from miscreant to saint of sorts begins when he dons priestly robes for entertainment and for that reason deters intruding Japanese soldiers running to the chapel shouting, "We've got virgins!" Seeing the advantages of the pose, Burns is constantly placed on the vestments, shaves his beard and evolves to the personage of "Father John." PHOTOS: top ten Summer season Superheroes Ever A "good" Japanese officer later apologizes for his males's waywardness and supplies protection for a while. But he eventually demands the convent women sing inside a "party" for Japanese authorities, which everyone knows can result in rape and worse, triggering an excellent climactic act of self-sacrifice for that heretofore superficial, materialistic hookers, while using heroic participation of Burns. An indisputable emotional and moral potency lies behind the means by which these good-time lowlifes rise for the occasion to complete one great non selfish act when referred to as upon to get this done. But a lot of in regards to the conditions as well as the way the secret is attracted off is not practical and unbelievable, from both an authentic-world or film perspective, to produce the payback credible or as effective since it method to be. Despite the fact that some moments venture out to the corpse-tossed city streets to provide a perception of the encompassing barbarity and horror, a lot of the picture is restricted for the chapel and immediate surroundings. One of the youthful women, Shu (Zhang Xinyi), provides prospective through narration, along with a couple of other interesting figures emerge, plus a smart, bespectacled boy George (Huang Tianyuan) who takes proper care of his pubescent female co-employees, and Mr. Meng (Cao Kefan), a collaborationist by getting an uncertain lease on existence. Once the gears are set up for your large finale, there's a lot of dawdling inside the particulars, which has the double negative effect of slowing down lower dramatic momentum and emphasizing the far-fetched character in the plot being perpetrated. When Burns, which has unaccounted for capabilities just like a hairstylist and makeup artist, finishes concentrate on Mo, he's told, inside the film's hardest lapse into modern parlance, the comfort in the women "all would love you to supply them a transformation!" If Warner Bros. had developed a film using this plot in 1942, it could make effective anti-Japanese propaganda and many likely absorbing drama inside the bargain. Today it really plays like hokum. Patriotic Lithuanian pic breaks records
MOSCOW -- A romantic costume drama about a 19th-century peasant rebellion has become the first Lithuanian film ever to take more than Euros 1 million ($1.3 million) at the local box office. "Tadas Blinda" -- a glossy, colorful romp that tells the true story of the Baltic country's own Robin Hood character, Tadas Blinda, who led a peasant revolt against a brutal Russian army in the 1860s -- has been seen by 9% of the country's 3.5 million citizens. Starring a locally famous singer Mantas Jankavicius in his debut acting role, the film is the first feature for director Donatas Ulvydas and also first for producer Zilvinas Naujokas. Pic had a budget of $1.35 million. Released late September on 13 screens, the film has been seen by nearly 282,000 people -- 15% more than achieved by the previous record holder, "Titanic," although its box office is 10% lower than "Avatar," which as a 3D movie sold tickets at a premium. Naujokas is one of Lithuania's leading film distributors, whose company Acme Film is the second biggest distributor in the Baltics, working with Sony, Warner and most independents, including Summit and Lionsgate. In the past two weeks, he has been in Chicago and Los Angeles promoting international sales of the film, targeting Lithuanian emigres in North America and South America. "We're doing premieres for the Lithuanian communities worldwide," Naujokas told Variety. "There have been screenings in London, Los Angeles and Chicago already, and there are plans for NY, Washington, Dublin, Cork, Edinburgh, Birmingham and other European cities too." Naujokas is also in talks with Canadian distributors and Australian Lithuanian communities, and was planning to see the Lithuanian ambassador to Argentina in Buenos Aires on Friday. "These screenings are strongly targeted at Lithuanian immigrants, but hopefully some territories will buy the movie, at least for TV and DVD," he added. Sales of the international version of the movie, "Fireheart: The Legend of Tadas Blinda," are being handled by Planeta Inform and offers were "on the table" following AFM last month, Naujokas said. A Russian dubbed version is being prepped as two of the main actors, mother and daughter Tatyana Lyutaeva and Agniya Ditkovskite, are well known in Russia, and Donatas Banionis, who played Kris Kelvin in Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky's cult 1972 sci-fi film "Solaris," also appears in the film. The film goes to DVD in Lithuania from the second half of January. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
'Glee' Recap: Sam's Return, Sectionals Showdown
Ray Mickshaw/FOX A former Universal Network Television employee might soon get to bring to a jury claims that behind the scenes of TV show House there's "hard-drinking, over-sexed, cussing, gun-toting males" who made life difficult for her.our editor recommends'House' Star Hugh Laurie Says He'll Retire From TV Acting Once Show EndsOlivia Wilde Makes Final 'House' Appearance Monday: 'I See It as a Really Important Chapter in My Life' (Video) In July 2010,Carl Jones, who spent four years working as an assistant property master on the Fox medical mystery show, suedHouseproducer Universal and two of its staffers, claiming that he was victim to sexual harassment and was fired when he spoke up about allegedly obnoxious behavior on the part of his supervisors. After nearly a year and a half of extensive discovery and pre-trial motions, Los Angeles Superior Court JudgeRichard Fruinindicated last week his willingness to have a jury decide whether Jones was retaliated against for objecting to a hostile workplace. Jones makes some wild allegations in his lawsuit about back-stage behavior on the show. He targets his supervisorsTyler PattonandMike Caseyfor repeated bad acts and says his genitals were groped and that he was called a "bitch," "faggot," "slave," and "pussy." In the prop trailer where Jones worked, the plaintiff alleges that adult magazines and adult movies were around and that his supervisors were hard drinkers who would invite females from the wardrobe and other production departments there to engage in sexual activity. Jones allegeshe was forced to clean up semen and condom wrappers and was ridiculed when he declined to go out to a nearby off-set strip club. The set ofHouseis also described as a dangerous place to work. Against Universal's policies, Patton allegedly brought a real gun there and would throw knifes in between bouts of tequila drinking. Jones says he was fired in March 2010, by an extremely drunk Patton, after which he complained to Garret van der Meer, the show's co-executive producer/unit production manager. Jones says his complaints were ignored, and the former staffer believes that speaking up about what was going on, including contacting his union, led to retaliation, included being "blackballed from all Universal Productions." Jones says he scored another job after his dismissal, but as a result of being placed on a blacklist, he wasn't able to get access to the Fox lot, so he then lost that second job. Universal wanted a summary judgment dismissal of this lawsuit, saying that Jones had failed to exhaust his administrative remedies, that his claims were time-barred, and that the plaintiff couldn't show "discriminatory motive based on his gender or perceived sexual orientation." The studio said that each season was an independent one in terms of employment and that the decision to not rehire Jones for Season 7 of House couldn't be tied to Jones' allegations of sexual innuendo on the set. The defendant believes that Jones' theories about why he was dismissed are merely speculative. For their part,Patton and Casey vigorously denied they engaged in the above-described offensive conduct. At a hearing last week, Judge Fruin considered some of the evidence submitted in depositions so far and tentatively decided there are enough triable issues to reject Universal's motions to dismiss discrimination, harassment and retaliation claims. He threw out claims based on the Unruh Civil Rights Act, and asked for additional briefings for a hearing scheduled for December 16. If the judge sticks to his tentative ruling, the case could be on track to be heard by a jury next year. Oscar Index: So an Artist and a Horse Walk into a Bar...
Good news and bad news this week from Movieline’s Institute For the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics — the good news being that a handful of critics organizations and awards bodies have helped to draw the year’s noteworthiest (i.e. Oscar-baitiest) titles and talent of the season into their sharpest relief yet. The bad news: Sharp relief remains a total mess, with the fields in most major categories wide open heading into December. Which is the way we like it, right? Right? Ugh. To the Index… [Click the graphs for full-size images.] The Leading 10: 1. The Artist 2. War Horse 3. The Descendants 4. The Help 5. Midnight in Paris 6. Hugo 7. Moneyball 8. The Tree of Life 9. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close 10. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Outsiders: Margin Call; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2; The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn; My Week With Marilyn; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; Shame First things first: Anyone who tells you the Gotham Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, NY Film Critics Circle Awards and tomorrow’s National Board of Review Awards have no impact whatsoever on the Oscar race is either misinformed or deeply in denial. I know: I used to be one of them myself, hewing to the austerity and imperviousness of the Academy Awards, especially by such starfucking hat-passers as IFP and Film Independent. But when FIND executive director Dawn Hudson wound up hopping to the Academy’s CEO gig earlier this year, it was roughly my 843rd sign in the last five years of the institutional insularity that binds such awards-culture monoliths. People can inveigh about the NYFCC’s own austerity and rectitude, but let’s face it: If I knew I could A) jolt a film like Moneyball to awards life after two months in hibernation and B) get Brad Pitt to come to my party, I’d give the movie my Best Actor and Best Screenplay awards, too. These guys didn’t even see one of the movies long regarded as the season’s biggest wild card (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) just so they could vote first in the derby, and what for? So they could perpetuate the awards narrative that Harvey Weinstein initiated back in May? It’s all connected — profiles, visibility, timing. Check out Oscar oracle Mark Harris’s painstaking analysis this week for his view, or Mike Ryan’s narrower breakdown of if/how the NYFCC has recently tended to move the Oscar needle. Look at this week’s select honorees at the Gothams (not to mention Scott Feinberg’s helpful follow-up). I mean, Charlize Theron? Gary Oldman? I love both — especially in their new films (hint hint) — but we are ultimately talking about deploying any and every means available to cling to the neurons of an aging, overstimulated voting elite of 6,000-plus for the next two months. Can your organization do it better than my organization? Give it your best shot. And so on… and so on… Anyway! As noted, the awards bustle paid off most nicely for The Artist and Moneyball, the latter of which also had Pitt and fellow nomination-hunter Jonah Hill conveniently, simultaneously out and about on the campaign trail. (The Tree of Life, for which Pitt split his NYFCC Best actor nod, also benefited from tying Beginners at the Gothams. (I repeat: The Tree of Life tied Beginners — a distinction that one may think might invalidate the Gothams entirely were it not for the fact that the awards cognoscenti have spent the last 48 hours writing about them.) The Artist, meanwhile, will take its critical approbation and Indie Spirit nods (which are supposed to be for American films, but whatever), but it’ll really take its $52,500 opening-weekend per-screen average. Alas, the disturbing news arrives via Nathaniel Rogers: Everyone predicting a win for The Artist before the nominations are even announced should consider the following list and sobering fact: No movie about movies has ever won Best Picture. […] You’d think that Hollywood’s High Holy Night, which is one big self-congratulatory spectacle, would embrace movies about movies and they do to a point. But perhaps even Hollywood’s notoriously fulsome egos feel sheepish about taking it all the way. Do they fear it would be overkill, the back-patting night of nights morphing into something far more orgiastic, a daisy chain of self regard? Excellent questions! In a semi-related development, movie-love nostalgia showcase Hugo came out strong as well in limited-wide release, portending, in the words of one wag, “early rustlings of a longer-running sleeper success, the kind of success that happens infrequently in Hollywood and even more rarely in the family film realm.” Combined with staggeringly strong reviews, that success would almost certainly secure Hugo’s spot in the Best Picture coterie. It’s a tandem War Horse doesn’t need nearly as desperately, but kudos to Steven Spielberg for not taking any chances on a holiday weekend when his most formidable competition was raking in the accolades and cash. The filmmaker and Disney unveiled his latest for press and industry insiders at a handful of screenings in NYC and L.A., plus a public sneak preview (and a Web Q&A) attended by Spielberg himself. The feedback among the Oscar orthodoxy was incredibly strong, with influencers like Steve Pond, Sasha Stone, David Poland, Kristopher Tapley, Anne Thompson and numerous tweeting others (“Wept through last half of WAR HORSE. Beautiful story of hope and love in the worst of times,” wrote Devin Faraci) going to bat for it as the formidable Best Picture contender we always knew it would be. For the prosecution, meanwhile, Jeffrey Wells dismissed Tapley’s analysis in particular (which downplayed critics awards, incidentally) as “one of the basest insults to the Academy membership I’ve ever read.” Now that’s when you know you have a real contender. One last thing: How about Patrick Goldstein’s idea of a luxury tax for studios lavishly pushing the likes of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2? By publicly identifying the biggest spenders, a luxury tax could serve as a disincentive for crass studio excess. It might also help level the Oscar playing field. The vast majority of recent Oscar best picture nominees have been films that were either financed by a major studio or one of its specialty film divisions, which, if necessary, can draw on the resources of the parent conglomerate. (The 2007 best picture nominee Babel from Paramount Vantage is a good example.) Given the new formula for picking best picture nominees, if Warners’ ad spree earns Hallows 5% of the first-place votes for best picture, it could knock a smaller movie out of the running. Even though indie movies can still earn a best picture win, as Summit’s The Hurt Locker did in 2009, most Oscar insiders say that when it comes to vaulting your film into the awards season conversation, money talks. Love it! Except this whole thing about penalties going to causes like the eventual Academy museum or film scholarships for underprivileged kids is a clear misappropriation of funds that should be going to the Consider Uggie campaign. Thoughts? The Leading 5: 1. Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist 2. Steven Spielberg, War Horse 3. Alexander Payne, The Descendants 4. Martin Scorsese, Hugo 5. David Fincher, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Outsiders: Stephen Daldry, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close; Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris; Bennett Miller, Moneyball; Tate Taylor, The Help; George Clooney, The Ides of March; Tomas Alfredson, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy As usual, their films’ rising tides generally lifted the filmmakers’ boats — or the inverse, as evidenced by The Descendants and Alexander Payne. According to NY Post critic and NYFCC member Lou Lumenick, Payne’s film never received more than 17 points in any round of Best Picture voting, and the director himself never broke through a top-three cluster of Hazanavicius, Scorsese and, uh, Lars von Trier. Thanks for playing, Lars! Mr. Spielberg will take it from here.

Jennifer Lawrence on Katniss Everdeen: 'Her Face Can't Be Badass'
The possibilities certainly in Jennifer Lawrence's favor right now. Not just did she grab an Oscar nomination this year on her breakout performance in 'Winter's Bone,' but Lawrence gained the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen within the long awaited adaptation of Suzanne Collins's best-selling YA book 'The Hunger Games.' A primary reason she outperform her Katniss rivals? Possibly the truth that she knows the smoothness very well- a minimum of knowing from her new interview with Vanity Fair. "Katniss is definitely an incredible character: she's a hunter although not a killer, a 16-year-old who's having in to the arena," Lawrence told Vanity Fair. "These children are killing each other only if they do not they'll die. It's pointless, pointless, unjustified violence. It's heartbreaking. After I auditioned, I told [director] Gary [Ross], 'I understand if you do not hire me, but please keep in mind that after Katniss shoots a bow and kills someone, her face can't be badass.' So there is nothing awesome about her. It isn't like she looks round the arena and goes, Yeah, I acquired this. I believe she looks around helplessly, and thinks, I designed a promise to my sister which i would survive now I must kill to be able to achieve this.Inch Seems like the Katniss 'Hunger Games' visitors know and love. Can anybody really believe there is some question about Lawrence's casting initially due to her hair color? Dancing With the Stars' David Arquette Gets Candid About Courteney Cox
David Arquette Has David Arquette danced his way back into the heart of his estranged wife, Courteney Cox? "No," says Arquette, the latest dancer to be shown the door on Dancing With the Stars. Sitting in the audience and watching Arquette dance his heart out week after week, there were two things you couldn't miss: First was the joy on the face of his 7-year-old daughter, Coco, and second were the tears in the eyes of Cox, 47, who sat ringside. "I like that people hope for us," says Arquette, 40. "But it really is time to move on." The two married in 1999; they formally separated in October 2010. "It's been more than a year," says Arquette. "And I think to a certain extent when a woman gets to a place [where she doesn't want to be married], it's really hard to ever get back." "We love each other deeply," he continues. "We're really connected as friends, we're connected for life. But it's not like that [romantic love] any longer. She feels for me, she cares about me. And I care about her. When she was directing her episode of Cougar Town, I was really nervous for her, and we met and talked about it. We're very supportive of each other. But when romance dies, it changes the dynamic of a relationship." Arquette quickly got a reputation off the dance floor for his sweetness, goofiness and candor, especially about his recent struggle with alcoholism and depression. He checked himself into rehab on January 1 and says dancing has been a boon to his 10 months of sobriety, getting him into shape and keeping him focused. "What I had to overcome was my general clumsiness, because I'm not the most graceful of people," he says. "But I'm learning grace through this process. I'm learning control and I'm learning balance. Those are all themes within my life." What is the best thing he took away from the experience? On Monday night, after doing his cha cha, "I was called a dancer," he says proudly, referring to the comments by head judge Len Goodman. "So at least I can go home with my head held high."

Will Katie Couric's New Talk Show Mean the Death of 'General Hospital'?
This article originally appeared in the Nov. 4 issue of The Hollywood Reporter.our editor recommendsKatie Couric Opens Up About Her New Talk Show (Q&A)Katie Couric Talk Show Will Be Called 'Katie' (Photo) Disney/ABC announced Oct. 24 that it has already cleared Katie Couric's syndicated Katie to air in more than 60 percent of U.S. homes when it bows in fall 2012, fueling speculation about the future of the soap that has aired at 3 p.m. in most markets since 1963. ABC, which in September drew the ire of soap fans by replacing the long-running All My Children with the foodie chat show The Chew and jettisoning One Life to Live to the web, likely won't decide the fate of its last remaining soap until the spring. But General Hospital clearly is under the microscope. The soap will "compete based on ratings and costs" with other offerings, says a network rep. PHOTOS: 'All My Children': Famous Alums of ABC's Daytime Drama Chew is off to a mediocre start, luring 1.9 million total viewers daily in its third week -- well below the 2.4 million that All My Children drew a year ago. But Chew, as well as The Revolution, a lifestyle strip that will launch in January, costs much less to produce than a soap. And while GH still averages 2.43 million viewers, that's down from 2.47 million last year and off 20 percent this season among females 18-to-49. PHOTOS: Katie Couric Talk Show Will Be Called 'Katie' "There's no extra reward based on how passionate people are about a show, especially when it might not be the right audience," says Sam Ford, an academic and co-editor of the book The Survival of Soap Opera. Sources say Katie is generating lower syndication fees than Disney had hoped but still will pull in more than $10,000 a week in such markets as Atlanta, Detroit and Dallas. Disney-owned stations in big markets will each pony up nearly $50,000 a week, helping to produce about $60 million annually and giving networks strong incentives to air the show in plum time slots -- just like the one that GH occupies. After failure to obvious a license for that sample on a single album, West's utilisation of the sample on another album without permission is stated to become a good example of knowing and willful misappropriation. Through the years, many elder musical artists have grown to be sensitive about illegal sampling from more recent functions, and couple of music artists happen to be as litigious about this score as Manley, that has introduced to the court, amongst others, Michael Jackson, Jefferson Plane and Cypress Hill. Carolina Bartczak...Got the Part
Coming from a family of engineers (mechanical, chemical, and aerospace), Carolina Bartczak followed suit and earned a biochemistry degree from the University of Toronto. But the scientific community lost a rising star when a friend suggested that Bartczak attend a local audition. Nothing came of it, but the acting bug bit hard. Shortly thereafter, the industrious young upstart was voicing the detective lead in "The Mysteries of Alfred Hedgehog," a French-Canadian animated TV series airing internationally.Already a member of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television, and Radio Artists, the Canadian actors' union, Bartczak set her sights on America and relocated to NY. After completing a two-year program at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre and an improv course at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, she was ready to land her first on-camera role."I came across the film 'Plato's Reality Machine' while going through Back Stage at my favorite coffee shop in Brooklyn," she recalls. "The role really stood out for me: a girl trying to pursue her dreams in NY." Paralleling Bartczak's own story, the character, Maggie Phillips, abandons her professional studies for an artistic career in NY City. The director of this SAG Ultra Low Budget feature, Myles Sorensen, had just learned that one of his leads had dropped out of the production, mere days before shooting was to commence. Bartczak arrived at the last-minute audition without any time to properly prepare."From her first read, she seemed to get who Maggie was and tapped right into her psyche," Sorensen says. "Then I gave Carolina some different adjustments, and she was able to alter her performance and explore with me, so I knew we could work together. She needed to be able to convey a combination of strength and vulnerability that is difficult to pull off. And she did it with flying colors."Bartczak, currently represented by Richard Rosenwald, credits her improv training at UCB with allowing her to excel at the cold audition opposite the film's male lead. "It has been an enormous asset in auditioning," she says. "You're forced to let go of any preconceptions, of any ideas, and fully focus on your partner. [You're] able to immediately take notes and incorporate them and drop the preconceptions of the role that you brought to the audition room."Has Back Stage helped you get cast in the past year? We'd love to tell your story. Be in the weekly column by emailing casting@backstage.com for NY or bswcasting@backstage.com for Los Angeles with "I Got the Part" in the subject line.

Kevin Bacon Was Not Happy About Having a Double in 'Footloose'
Whenever someone mentions the words 'Footloose' and Kevin Bacon in the same sentence, there's usually some reference to the fact that the star didn't actually do a lot of his own dancing. Well, if you ever meet Mr. Bacon, you probably don't want to bring that whole "double" business up. At all. In the latest issue of People, Bacon discusses his frustration with having to sit out while someone else completed his scenes. "I was furious ... It's like a starting pitcher getting taken out of a game -- no one wants to be told they can't get the guy out ... I had a stunt double, a dance double and two gymnastics doubles. There were five of us in the f---ing outfit, and I felt horrible. ... When the movie came out, the studio told me to never mention that they used a double. While I was in no position to do this, I told them, 'You are out of your f--king mind!' " Stunt double or not, it didn't matter in the end. 'Footloose' developed a huge following and ended up launching Kevin Bacon's acting career. You can assume Kenny Wormald -- a former back-up dancer for Justin Timberlake, for what it's worth and the star of the new 'Footloose' -- is hoping the same happens for his remake, which opens this weekend. "I had been concerned about the three dimensional conversion at first, because 'The Host' wasn't planned like a three dimensional movie," helmer Bong Joon-ho, told a news conference in Busan. "But I am pleased with the converted version now for the reason that it can make space perception more lively," Bong added. Bong refused gossips that his next project "Le Transperceneige" may well be a three dimensional film. The $34 million sci-fi film, which is dependant on a French comicbook, will start shooting next March in Prague. "The Host" (2006) still supports the No. 1 position in the all-time local film B.O. chart. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

'Cock' comes Off Broadway
MacdonaldProducers Stuart Thompson and Jean Doumanian will require "Cock" Off Broadway, joining using the U.K.'s Royal Court to create scribe Mike Bartlett's London hit to Gotham inside a run that opens early in the year. James Macdonald ("Top Women," "Dying City"), who helmed the play in the 2009 London preem in the Court, returns to stage the show Stateside. Production has not been cast and often will likely star American thesps. "Cock" reps an uncommon commercial endeavor for Off Broadway, the financial aspects which many producers deem inhospitable because of factors such as the marketing domination of Broadway and also the reduced potential earnings of more compact theaters. Inside a help to tha harsh truth, though, Macdonald's spare manufacture of "Cock" features couple of set demands and just four stars. Attention-getting title could also attract ticket buyers' attention but tend to prove a marketing challenge in lots of profanity-averse guides. Doumanian ("August: Osage County") includes a recent history Off Broadway, getting created a string of excursions in the Barrow Street Theater including "Our Town," "Mistakes Were Made" and also the current "Cymbeline." Thompson would be a producer on "Red-colored Light Winter" in the Barrow Street in 2006. Theater, dates and full creative team for "Cock" still be set. Contact Gordon Cox at gordon.cox@variety.com

Favreau has been working for a while on the script, which chronicles life and dating among single parents in Santa Monica. It marks his first foray into TV series writing. The Iron Lady will get a strange new parliamentary poster
The Iron Lady, the Margaret Thatcher biopic starring Meryl Streep, has arrived a very quite odd poster at Yahoo! Movies. The focus is definitely an picture of Streep's uncannily accurate Thatcher-face, however, many Illustrator work has got the Houses of Parliament growing from the side of her noggin. It isn't the Photoshopping's incompetent, it simply creates an extremely bizarre poster. The 2 images don't genuinely have a visible symmetry to warrant the splicing, also it feels pretty heavy-handed (yes, we all know she was into politics).Nevertheless, this oddity is hardly prone to deter the eager throngs keen to ascertain if this can earn Streep more silverware on her collection.Browse the full image here:The Iron Lady opens 6 The month of january 2012.

MTV orders six series
MTV has greenlit four unscripted series and two laffers in wide-ranging projects, a major programming push for the young-skewing net. On the reality side, cabler is transforming the feature film "Catfish" into a series (Daily Variety, March 31). Show comes from the producers of the theatrical docu, including Nev Schulman, who will examine what happens when online friends finally meet in person. Relativity Real will produce. "Hoods" follows one celebrity each week in a return to their hometown. Pilot episode will feature singer Kesha going back to Nashville. Moving to a sports-themed show, "Wait Till Next Year" examines a perennially losing high school football team that's searching for their first win after a 43-game, five-year losing streak. "Wake Brothers" looks at wakeboarding brothers Philip and Bob Soven, and how they compete -- both professionally and personally -- with one another. On the scripted side, Craig Wright is penning "Underemployed." Skein captures the angst college graduates sometimes face upon leaving school and the often difficult time they have in finding their place in the world, occasionally having to take dead-end jobs to make ends meet. Series stars Jared Kusnitz and Inbar Lavi. Finally, "Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous" stars comic Bo Burnham as a person who leaves school and hires a documentary film crew to help him pursue the new American Dream: Becoming famous with no apparent talent whatsoever. "These shows are different and unique from each other, but they co-exist in speaking to a millennial audience," programming topper David Janollari told Variety. "It proves that scripted, reality and, sometime in the future, animation can live harmoniously on the channel." Series look to tap into the 18-24 demo sweet spot, an age group that has come to the cabler in record numbers for "Jersey Shore." Net is currently having success with the first season of "Awkward" and is readying for a January premiere of "I Just Want My Pants Back." Not all shows have been hits, of course. "Skins" was pulled after one season and "The Hard Times of RJ Berger" was recently given its walking papers. Contact Stuart Levine at stuart.levine@variety.comWatch Movies Online
Cheers & Jeers: Can Peter Tolan Rescue Baywatch?
David Hasselhoff Cheers to Peter Tolan for following up Rescue Me with an even riskier project: writing a big-screen version of Baywatch. Want more Cheers & Jeers? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine. The Emmy-winning scribe revealed on the gut-busting podcast The Matthew Aaron Show that he's just finished penning a movie for Paramount loosely based on the long-running lifeguard drama. Tolan joked that some of his friends had tried to stage an intervention to convince him not to take on the film, which he described as a non-campy comedy in the spirit of Stripes about two young guys who take life-changing jobs on the beach. Tolan, who said he's never watched the original series, divulged that new roles had been written for series stars David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, but it's unclear whether they'll participate if the movie gets a greenlight. I, for one, hope it does: If Tolan can make a series about post-9/11 NY City firefighters funny, anything's possible. Would you go see a Baywatch movie? Djimon Hounsou Is The Angel Of Death
For Alex Proyas' Paradise LostThere is another angel in heaven tonight - cinematically speaking, at least. Alex Proyas has just added Djimon Hounsou to the cast of Paradise Lost. Based on John Milton's epic 17th century poem, the story will expand upon the massive spat in heaven between squabbling archangels Lucifer (Bradley Cooper) and Michael (Ben Walker), who have a big disagreement over God's sudden love for his new creation, humans. Lost's plot will also detail the angels' role in Adam and Eve's fall from grace. Hounsou's been picked for the role of Abdiel, the angel of death. He denounces Lucifer's plan to have his fellow seraphs revolt and brings word of his treachery to God, only to discover that He is already aware of events (omniscient, innit?) and is preparing His forces to fight. Wonder if an angelic chorus will start singing Eye of the Tiger to pump them up?With a script in hand that has seen contributions from the likes of Byron Willinger, Stuart Hazeldine, Philip de Blasi, Lawrence Kasdan and Ryan Condal, Proyas will start shooting later this year, utilising performance capture technology to bring the various angels to life.

Bachelor Pad 2: Meet the Contestants!
By Olivia Heinle -- On August 8, the second season of the Bachelor Pad airs on ABC. From Justin Rated-R Rego to Michelle Money, this season features the best characters from Bachelor past. Whos going to walk away with money? And who will finally find love? Access breaks down the cast and sizes up the competition for the $250,000 prize! Alli Travis, (The Bachelor Season 15, Brad Womack) During the first rose ceremony, and within minutes of meeting Brad, Alli bent over in front of him to see what he thought of her derrire. Supposedly her ex-boyfriend thought it was too big, so she wanted Brads opinion. His thoughts didnt matter in the end, because she was sent home during her very first one-on-one date. Bachelor Pad Prediction - Stacked up against outgoing, memorable contestants, shell be one of the first to go. Ames Brown, (The Bachelorette Season 7, Ashley Hebert) With degrees from Harvard, Yale and Columbia, Ames was quickly regarded as the smartest person to ever appear on the show. The quirky east-coaster took things slow with Ashley, but was eliminated after a romantic hometown date that involved a horse, carriage and many collared shirts. Bachelor Pad Prediction Ames has really thrown himself into the cream of the Bachelor franchise crop by joining this cast. With his smarts, he could outplay everyone til the end, or just end up choosing to leave early. Blake Julian, (The Bachelorette Season 7, Ashley Hebert) The only reason why we (may) remember Blake is because he was just on TV. Even though both he and Ashley are dentists, that conversation could only go so far because he was eliminated without even getting a one-on-one date. Bachelor Pad Prediction Blake seems to have a friendly, fun demeanor, which will bode well with the other contestants, making him a strong contender for the cash prize. Also, he is considered fresh meat in the Bachelor world. Ella Nolan, (The Bachelor Season 14, Jake Pavelka) On her first one-on-one date with Jake, Ella took a big step and introduced him to her son. While everything seemed like sunshine and roses (pun intended!) for these two, she was eventually sent home during a two-on-one date. Afterward, she expressed nothing but positive opinions for her fellow housemates, especially Vienna Girardi, who was disliked by many of the girls. Bachelor Pad"Prediction Her kind persona and good relations with many of the contestants will save her from getting voted out of the house for a while. Erica Rose, (The Bachelor Season 9, Lorenzo Borghese) The daughter of a prominent plastic surgeon, her occupation was listed as socialite. She was eliminated on only the third episode, but will be forever in the hearts of Bachelor fans, for wearing tiaras and causing constant drama. She was recently featured on VH1s Youre Cut Off! and claims she is actually very down-to-earth and independent. Bachelor Pad Prediction Regardless of how down-to-earth she says she is, if she continues to wear tiaras in the house, her fellow contestants may get the wrong idea. But she makes for good TV, so hopefully she will last for at least half the season. Gia Allemand, (The Bachelor Season 14, Jake Pavelka) While her relationship with Jake lasted until the second-to-last episode, Gia is better known for what happened AFTER the show. She briefly dated Wes Hayden from Jillians season and then got into a classy Twitter fight, (as all Twitter fights are), with Vienna Girardi after Vienna supposedly hooked up with Wes during a Bachelor reunion. What a whirlwind. Bachelor Pad Prediction While she may be the only person who has been on Bachelor Pad before, her new boyfriend, NBA star Ryan Anderson, and her tense relationship with Vienna are factors that will lead to an early departure. Graham Bunn, (The Bachelorette Season 4, DeAnna Pappas) Even though he made it as far as the hometown date episode, Graham and DeAnnas relationship had already wilted like the roses he had previously received. Throughout the season, their interactions only consisted of her telling him how beautiful he was. Graham and his pretty face later dated a soap opera star after the show. Bachelor Pad Prediction He will go far in this competition because he doesnt have many connections to the other contestants, so they can have a (semi) open mind about him. And did we mention he is very good-looking? Holly Durst, (The Bachelor Season 12, Matt Grant) Fans certainly remember Holly from Matts season, right? Uhhh does anyone even remember that season? Yeah, not so much. Anyway, Holly was eliminated early on, but was quickly tangled into an incestual-like web of romance. She briefly dated DeAnna Pappas ex-fianc Jesse Csincsak, broke up with him, and then got engaged to Michael Stagliano. Michaels twin brother, Stephen, got engaged to DeAnna. Take a minute to process that. Bachelor Pad Prediction Did we mention that Holly broke off her engagement to Michael? And that Michael (more on him coming up!) is also on the show this season? Enough said. Jackie Gordon, (The Bachelor Season 15, Brad Womack) After a romantic one-on-one date with Brad that consisted of a princess makeover and private Train concert, there was nowhere to go but downhill for Jackie. She got eliminated after freaking out about repelling down a waterfall. Bachelor Pad Prediction Jackie is a shy human, which will end up hurting her in a crowd where you have to be able to hold your own. Regardless, it sounds like she found love and will have one close ally in the house. According to Life & Style, Jackie and former Ashley Hebert suitor/fellow Bachelor Pad contestant Ames Brown were recently seen enjoying a weekend in Napa Valley together. Jake Pavelka, (The Bachelor Season 14) Where to begin? Its obvious this man loves being on TV. He originally appeared on Jillian Harris season, then his own. He continued on to a televised breakup and Dancing With the Stars. To top it off, he will be gracing us with his presence once again. At this point, its obvious Jakes looking for attention not love. Bachelor Pad Prediction Jakes ex-fiance, Vienna Girardi, and her current boyfriend, Kasey Kahl, will be competing on the show as well. Last time they saw each other was at their intimate breakup on national television, where they fought about every topic under the sun. Regardless of how long he stays on the show, lets just hope this is the last we see of him. Justin Rated-R Rego, (The Bachelorette Season 6, Ali Fedotowski) Last time we saw Justin, the Rated-R wrestler, was when Ali chased him through foliage in a hotel garden after she found out he had multiple girlfriends back home. Bachelor Pad Prediction Because of his sneaky ways, fellow contestants will get rid of him early on. Besides, who knows if hes left someone (or multiple someones?!?) at home again this time? Kasey Kahl, (The Bachelorette Season 6, Ali Fedotowski) After Ali Fedotowski told Kasey that he wasnt the guy for her, he got a tattoo professing that he would guard and protect her heart forever, probably from guys like Justin Rated-R. Even though he inked over half his arm for her, Ali sent him home once again. Bachelor Pad Prediction Kasey and his girlfriend, Vienna Girardi, will have to fight the ridiculous battle that is Jake Pavelka throughout the season. But because they are already paired up, they will be frontrunners, fighting until the end for the money. Kirk Dewindt, (The Bachelorette Season 6, Ali Fedotowski) Seemingly forgettable, if anyone actually knows who Kirk is then they probably remember him from his hometown date with Ali. He took her down to his basement so that she could see the family Taxidermy collection. At the shock of no one, he was eliminated soon after.Bachelor Pad Prediction The other guys from Alis season probably dont even remember him, so he could make it far by flying under the radar or leave right away. Either way, weve already forgotten who we were talking about. Moving on Melissa Schreiber, (The Bachelor Season 15, Brad Womack) After spending much of her time at the Bachelor house freaking out on Raichel Goodyear for no obvious reason and causing drama, Brad sent her packing. Bachelor Pad"Prediction Her vicious reputation will hinder her time on the show. Fellow contestants will want to stay far away from the girl whos known for picking constant fights for no reason. Michael Stagliano, (The Bachelorette Season 5, Jillian Harris) After the young break-dance teacher was eliminated from Jillians season, he went on to woo the aforementioned Holly Durst, a former Bachelor contender. Once engaged, they planned a double wedding with his twin brother, Stephen, and former Bachelorette DeAnna Pappas. Holly broke off the engagement, breaking Michaels heart yet again. Bachelor Pad Prediction Honestly, we dont care about how far along he gets in the competition. We just want to know what happens with Holly! Michelle Money, (The Bachelor Season 15, Brad Womack) From her prolonged, creepy stares to sneaking into Brads hotel room, Michelle made herself one of the only entertaining parts of Brads season. To secure her 15 minutes, she warned Ashley about Bentleys bad boy ways at the beginning of the recent season, getting her name out there one more time. Bachelor Pad Prediction Although shes known for being a bit crazy, Michelle could go far in the competition, by seducing and deceiving her fellow contestants along the way. We like her chances. Vienna Girardi, (The Bachelor Season 14, Jake Pavelka) Although she wasnt well-liked amongst the other girls vying for the Bachelors heart, she won Jake over in the end. But shes best known for her televised breakup with him, which ended when she stormed off the set in a fit of tears, never to be seen until the next time she could come on TV. But with a built in teammate in current beau Kasey, you never know how far she can go again! Bachelor Pad Prediction Vienna has the most dirty laundry in the house, having to deal with girls from Jakes season and also Jake himself. But her current boyfriend, Kasey Kahl, will be by her side to fend off the haters, making her a top contender for the money at the end. William Holman, (The Bachelorette Season 7, Ashley Hebert) The aspiring comedian and current cell phone salesman was the reason for one of Ashleys multiple breakdowns this season. During a comedy roast, he joked that he wished the Bachelorette were Emily or Chantal which is something everybody wished but would never actually say out loud. Bachelor Pad Prediction His borderline-annoying personality may rub people the wrong way, but is William even looking for love or money? Or just a comedy deal? Lets hope the curtain falls on him early. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
